When I contacted by your firm initially I had mentioned to the owner that I would need his very best salesperson. His reply was all his representatives were well qualified as he only hired the best people in the industry. When I told him that I doubted he had what I was looking for he understandably asked why.
My criteria at the time had me looking for a Savior. Someone other worldly, without limitations who had demonstrated the ability to walk on water. I truly felt this as the sales mission the individual was to be sent on was in combat terms a Suicide Mission. Who could possibly convey to a prospective buyer that despite the appearance of things that my business was viable?
In the time since the economic downturn in 2009, I had been operating with a tremendous overhead while offering an expensive product line of fine art paintings and sculptures to a clientele that had largely disappeared or were otherwise looking to have their pick of my inventory at 50% off the listed price. Playing no part in that game I had somehow managed to survive just long enough to find Lamar Rutherford.
Suffice it to say that in operating a fine art gallery I had employed quite a few gifted salespeople over the years whose livelihood depended on their ability to romanticize clients into expensive purchases. What I desperately needed now was an acrobat. Someone who could juggle the sales assignment while handling the fiscal explanations.
In August of2012, Lamar called on me to set up an appointment to review my needs. In meeting her I immediately knew I was in front of a very bright gal. She asked questions about my business that I would have expected from a seasoned business broker but they were presented in a way that intrigued me. I could tell immediately that she was very interested in knowing how my business operated. Lamar's interview last about 2 hours and at the conclusion she stated that she would like to meet with me in a few days to make a presentation to obtain a listing.
During the next few days I found myself nervous about our next meeting and I asked myself why. The reason for my anxiety was that I realized that I had found a salesperson capable of selling my business. As improbable as it was to believe I had met the one woman on the planet who could handle the mission I was desperate to assign.
Knowing the sales commission was a healthy reward I almost felt guilty about signing the sales listing as the task ahead was an uphill battle. The monthly rent on my gallery was $17,000.00 Sometimes when I mentioned this to people who knew me I would see a look of fear in their eyes. Add in payroll and operating costs and immediately you could easily overwhelm a prospective buyer. It was apparent that I needed a sales representative with a very strong financial background to navigate the financial waters we were swimming in.
At our next meeting Lamar made her presentation while soliciting my input on details and concluded it by asking for the listing. Without hesitating in the slightest I agreed. I had done my research, Lamar had a unique combination of degrees and licenses tailored to my needs and beyond that the personality suited to connect to her customer. Now she would have to go about finding a very particular buyer and that was not going to be easy.
The state of the US economy at the time Lamar signed our listing was not good. Financial news on a daily basis was unsettled. So what did Lamar do? She brought us a full price offer from a prospective buyer in Sweden. The clients flew in reviewed the opportunity and wrote offer contingent on their being granted an E-2 immigration Visa Talk about a mine field, poor Lamar was buried in paperwork and labored valiantly to assist her international clients. In the end the process was going to take too long and in the interim she had come in with (2) back-up offers.
As it was apparent we had found the right agent to sell the business I was now faced with making a decision to whom I would sell the business to. Ultimately Lamar brought me a well-educated buyer; professionally suited to administrate the business moving forward with whom I have every confidence will find success while realizing their dreams.
